Well with the Lily Festival next weekend here is a field update ..... looking good!

If it rains like they promise in the next two days we might even be able to get out there an pull some weeds. We have always been able to rototill and pull weeds a week or so before the festival but with this heat the ground is rock hard and so we hope to be able to tidy up!

Heat is what I ordered and heat is what I got..... the buds are so big now that are timed just right to pop. I think we will be on schedule.

Take a look at the photos I took tonight - well me and the bugs ... I thought the heat was supposed to make them drowsy!

When the lily field comes in bloom it makes me remember that there are little miracles all around!

Can't believe last blog was in May - guess I am not a technophobe!

As we approach Day Lily Festival time this year its with a bit of disappointment. Our lily field is looking very different this year - last year we were praying that the buds would not pop to early, this year we are praying that they swell and make a show. I think we are at least 2 weeks behind. We had a little flush of the early yellows but as Stephen was rototilling up there yesterday (and being bitten alive) I walked and the buds that are there are still tight and small.

WE NEED HEAT ..... guess its a double edged sword, if its too hot to garden no body comes in to see us but if we don't get a week of nice warm days with a bit of rain splashing in we might not have good color for the 23/24th,

But we have some nice plant material on the property so come on over and take a look. Annuals are all but done but some great perennials and some nice shrubs - the Hydrangeas are looking very showy.

I am also doing the new Organic Huntsville Market on Saturday mornings - its at Rivermill Park (where the new kids playground is behind Main Street) - think its a great venue and some fabulous vendors. I am taking Lilies and some nice herbs we grew and soon tomatoes ... Kelly has had us growing tomatoes for a while now - we would have had more but Stephen kept selling the plants!

Busy Busy Busy - Its that time of year

Stock has been arriving this past week,we are having to be careful because we are still getting frosts in the morning - Stephen has been putting the shrub stock in and out of the back barn each night ... not his most favorite task as it came from down south and is still soft. Our overwintered stocks are just starting to bud out and so we reckon we are at least 3 weeks later than last year.

These are gooseberry bushes - 3 differant types - ideal for those who like jams and baking

Good old favorites - the hardy geranium - still have to take them in and out for a while but they are so good when its hot.

New Hanging Baskets arrive, look at the new dark petunias

Spring in the UK where the daffodils were almost done!!!

Hi Everyone,

I had to go away for a couple of weeks at the end of March to the UK to help in a family emergency. Unfortunately had to spend more time dealing with that than going to garden centres or meandering through the gardens of historical estates which is my first love. I had forgotten just how wonderful Spring can be .... too many months of horrible snow and cold blotted out the memory banks. It did not help that it was a blizzard the weekend I got back

Hampstead Heath April 2011

I had one afternoon with and old girlfriend who took me for a walk on Hampstead Heath passing all the little cottages (at over $1million dollars each) with their pretty planters and hundreds of daffodils everywhere. The bluebells were almost finished but I found a couple of patches and took a couple of snaps. Kenwood House was resplendent with its meadow of daffodils and magnolia tree.

The Magnolia trees were MAGNIFICENT - pity we can't grow them up here, darn the frost. With London being almost a zone 9 its no wonder they are so happy. Travelling on the buses you see lots of them in many peoples front gardens, how lucky they are but I guess by the time I left they were getting pretty messy.

Don't know about you but I am itching to get out there and do something. I took this shot today and I am hoping we will not see any more of the white stuff for a while.

Just a couple of new additions to the family.

Here is our Ethan - born in November, living in Burk's Falls. It might be a couple of years before he can handle our tractor, but he is one special little lad

And this is Baby Michael born in January in South Africa - we look forward to meeting this little guy beore he is too much older

Well its been a half decent winter - not too cold, enough snow to make it pretty.

We have been busy in the house, doing a little reno work and putting on a bit of weight!! Personally I can't wait to get out into the fresh air and sink my fingers into some soil. I have done some ordering - but if you want me to bring in something special just give us a call and we will try to organize it for you. There will be a selection of bare root fruit trees again this year, they go fast so we would be happy to hold them if you wish.

Just to show you we might have a couple of more weeks to wait here is a couple of snaps taken today!

Things are winding down and have been quiet at the garden center during the week. I was fortunate enough to get a contract until the end of March (my winter life!) and am now working 3 days a week in Bracebridge . Right now it is not logical to open when I am not around.

When Saturday arrived and the sky looked grey we thought 'here we go again' ... another wet muddy festival weekend - why oh why. When Sarah Coombs arrived from the Radio Station and set up the remote - what a nice lady and very pretty - we were a bit glum, not many people milling around and even with give away competitions not the numbers we expected. BUT it did not rain! Bonus.
Then Sunday arrived and guess what .... PERFECT WEATHER!!!!!

We will open at 8am on Saturday 24th for our vendors to get set up - lots of differant local folks with all sorts of wares from collectables to jam! We have a kids art camp and our favorite face painter will be here.

At 10am FM105.5 will be broadcasting live from our venue with give aways and competitions.

Kearney Lions will be setting up their famous and very yummy BBQ plus Sprucedale and District Horticultural Society will be answering those gardening questions.

Today I was working in the heat trying to get some weeding done, once the plant material thickens in we won't be able to see the weeds ... well thats my theory!

Why not come pop past and see the progress - its quite phenomenal just how fast stuff is filling in.

Well after disasterous Mothers Day May picked up and was so busy we never even took photos, so here are a few from 1 June.

Our hearts were bleeding when we woke Saturday morning to a snow storm!!! What a shock from Mother Nature after all the wonderful weather we had been experiencing so far this spring. The roads were snow covered by 10:00 a.m. and it looked bleak for the our special speaker, Don Powers. Don was to be speaking on "Healing your Lawn" at 10:30 a.m.

Voila!!! Out of the snow they came!! Twenty four hardy gardeners eager to learn all about a new lifestyle for their lawns and gardens and to learn secrets of managing weeds and how to conserve water. It was a great event and very stimulating and useful to all who attended. The excellent coffee from Lily's Cafe warmed body and soul. Be sure not to miss our next free seminar. Look for upcoming details.

Here we are at Fern Glen Farm and Garden Centre, ready to welcome you to another year of great gardening. As you can see, we already have a gorgeous array of pansies and primroses to brighten up that sleepy looking garden of yours. Come on in and chose while there are so many different colours available. There are also some lovely primula that decided to winter over here and are showing off their new blooms.

The side yard is getting full of soil, mulch, manure and bags of "3 Way". There is a large pile of gravel and another of garden soil - dark enough to make a gardener drool!!!

Many perennials spent the winter protected here at Fern Glen. The staff have been busy cleaning this area up. New growth is peaking through everywhere. So exciting to see!!!

It isn't often that you see our greenhouse looking like this. Patiently waiting for the onslaught to come. Notice the new floor. Wow, it is beautiful!!!

We decided as a team that we would start short days in the greenhouse early April as it was stil very cold. Lots of our bare root product had arrived and needed to be attended to.

It was so good to be back with our hands in the dirt and as we had not been all together for a few months there was lots of gossip to catch up on too!

Lynn, Lynda, Francine and I had plenty of laughs on those cold days and we soon transformed our old greenhouse into a hive of activity.

Well it seems that winter flew by - and before we knew it there were trade shows to go to and orders to attend to. In early January we had a couple of intense days of trying to predict what we needed to order, some items were already sold out - can you believe. Its always so hard to guess what the economy was going to do. Doom and gloom was all we were hearing, plus there was still a heck of a lot of snow outside.
